![]() I just wish that seaplanes/floatplanes were possible but perhaps modders can add further "toggles". I bet that it'll become common to have one carrier with just fighters, another with dive bombers and a third with torpedo bombers. Which means that you can switch the capabilities of the "cag" on board any carrier depending on what you want the CTF to do - CAS or CAP or naval strikes. The different versions are designed through the use of combat experience. So all "classes" of planes have been scrubbed, not just transports and CAGs and we have the three types of chassis, each of which can function as the base for any number of different versions. It's also not known whether the carrier version will have to be built separately or whether - and this is what I suspect they will do - it's merely a toggle and once you have researched it, all versions of that model can now operate from carriers. It's unknown how this will affect their stats, if at all. You can create carrier versions of all 3 types of light airframes. Yeah, the Midway B-17 bombing of the JIN carrier task force was an act of desperation and the Yanks knew it from tests before the war - level bombing of ships is a waste of time and bombs on the open sea.ĭarkpatriot answered the question fully but I'll still add my 2cents. I don't believe any country used heavy bombers in a naval attack role other than bombing ships in ports when they were also bombing the ports but I might be wrong. For the larger ground based naval bombers they will probably have a naval attack attribute for medium bombers(and maybe medium fighters as well) that you can increase for naval bomber plane variants. One of the three light plane categories is torpedo bombers(the three categories are torpedo bombers, light bombers, and fighters) so that covers the light naval bombers that were more traditionally carrier based pretty well. Sea planes were also utilized some in these roles as less airfield infrastructure was needed to support them. Especially for the allies who were trying to extend the range so that there was less dead space where land based aircraft couldn't provide coverage for Atlantic convoys. Carrier based ones were of course more limited in size and often sacrificed range to be smaller and ground based ones often emphasized range since the ocean is a big place and they had a lot of ground to cover. Those that were intended to be carrier based and those that were intended to be ground based. There were also several different types of naval bombers. 1.) The munition carrying/release mechanisms and aiming mechanisms are different and 2.) The way the plane maneuvered to attack the target was different so which performance capabilities of the plane had more importance changed. Often planes had to be modified if they were going to use torpedoes for several reasons. Primarily the use of torpedoes but dive bombing was also an effective way to attack ships while naval bombers that were more focused on anti-submarine operations could drop depth charges and other anti-submarine weapons in methods more similar to conventional land bombing bombing techniques. Naval bombers were designed with attack methods that varied some from bombing land based targets.
